NIGHTINGALE · EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
Nightingale: founding the journal of the Data Visualization Society

The Data Visualization Society launched in February 2019. I was about the seventh member to sign up, and on the first day I suggested we start a publication, and one day a print magazine. Nightingale launched that July: first on Medium, then in 2021 on its own website with every article free, and then in print, designed with creative director Julie Brunet. It was built to give the community’s ideas a bigger audience: history, how-tos, interviews and personal stories.
Over six years we published 1,443 digital articles and five print magazines, and paid every writer and editor. By the time I stepped back in 2025 it had more than 6 million views, and the print magazine had subscribers in 59 countries.
